Geelani praises Maqbool, calls for strike on Feb 11

Suhail Abass:

Srinagar: Paying glowing tributes to Mohammad Maqbool Butt, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani Wednesday called for a complete shutdown on the late JKLF founder’s 27 death anniversary being observed on February 11.
“Conscientious nations never forget the sacrifices of their heroes. Martyr Maqbool Butt has a unique status among the people who sacrificed their lives for the Kashmiri freedom cause. He  raised the slogan of freedom at a time when the Kashmiri leadership had confused Kashmiris and voices of opposition were silenced . He created a shining example for the nation to follow by choosing the path of sacrifice and created history by embracing gallows for the cause of freedom,” Geelani was quoted in a statement issued by the amalgam here.
Geelani said the Kashmiri nation was indebted to Butt and the best way to pay tributes to the late leader would be to “stay faithful to his mission and take it to a logical end.”
“We cannot claim to be the followers of Maqbool Butt if we show soft corner for those who hanged Maqbool Butt. The best tribute to martyr Maqbool Butt would be to fight for freedom till our last breath,” he said.
Meanwhile, Geelani expressed serious concern over the “deteriorating” health of Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, ‘General’ Moosa and other incarnated Hurriyat leaders.
“These leaders are being denied proper medical treatment and subjected to a policy of political vendetta for their political beliefs,” he said.
He appealed International Red Cross  and Amnesty International to take notice of the “ill-treatment” meted out to incarnated Kashmiri leaders and use their influence to secure their release.
