Drugs, family problems major reasons for stone pelting: SSP

Srinagar: Police on Wednesday claimed that majority of alleged stone pelters arrested in Srinagar in the aftermath of summer unrest last year were either drug addicts or had parental problems.

Addressing a press conference here, SSP Srinagar, Ashiq Bukhari said that over a thousand alleged stone pelters were arrested by the police from this summer capital so far.

“Based on the home work done by us, 72 percent of the arrested were either found drug addicts or suffering from parental problem mainly lack of proper upbringing and lack of education,” he said.
He also claimed that “heroism shown by some of the stone pelters during the unrest was under the influence of drugs”.

The city police chief showed pictures mainly depicting youth kicking bullet proof paramilitary vehicles to sustain the claims.
He claimed that the youths were utilized by their mentors and slyly mentioned Lashker-e-Toiba as one of the guides.

Giving the details, he said Police station Zadibal during a routine vehicle checking at Shribhat Zadibal intercepted a Maruti vehicle (JK01A-4154) and during the checking recovered 159 injections containing psychotropic or hypnotic material.

“Two persons, Arshid Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Dar of Amira Kadal and Mohammad Yousuf Dantoo son of Mohammad Jamal Dantoo resident of  Rampora Chattabal were also arrested.”

During their preliminary questioning, the duo, he said, disclosed that they used to procure these injections without any prescription from an unknown person belonging to Koimoh Kulgam and thereafter used to either sell or self inject these drugs. “The identity of the said person is being ascertained.”

Further investigation into the case, the cop said an  offence of a much higher magnitude concerning animal skin smuggling surfaced.

In an another development, the SSP said, Police Station Nigeen apprehended a person, Abdul Majid Sofi son of Ghulam Ahmad of Gund Tailbal from KMD Adda Kashmir University extension and recovered 45 Kgs dried cannabis leaves from his possession.

“He used to buy dried cannabis leaves from Awantipora Pulwama because of the fact that dried cannabis leaves are sold at a lower price than Charas.” Case FIR No. 08/2011 under section 8/20 NDPS Act stands registered in police station Nigeen into the matter.
