Srinagar: Two policemen were among four people injured in violent clashes in Maisuma locality of this capital city this afternoon. Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Dispatch that scores of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) activists, led by Vice-Chairman took out a rally from party headquarters, Maisuma this afternoon demanding the return of mortal remains of its founder from New Delhi’s Tihar jail.
Chanting “We want freedom,” “Return the remains of Maqbool,” the protesters tried to march to the city centre. However, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police deployed in advance tried to stop the marchers. As the JKLF activists tried to break the cordon, the forces swung into action and detained JKLF Vice-President and seven of his activists.
The arrests triggered violent clashes in the area. Besides shouting slogans, the protesters hurled rocks and stones on the forces. The forces burst numerous teargas canisters to quell the pro-freedom demonstrators.
Four people, including two policemen were injured in the clashes. The cops have been identified as Abdul Hameed and Ghulam Qadir. The clashes were going on when this report was filed.
