International Conference concludes at JU Governor for effective application of Statistics for improved development planning........

JAMMU, DECEMBER 10 – Highlighting the importance of Statistics in the planning process, the Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, today said that application of the basic principles of this important discipline of knowledge could help in achieving higher levels of growth in the varied sectors of economic development. 
The Governor, as Chief Guest, was addressing the Valedictory Session of the 3-day “International Conference on Development and Applications of Statistics in Emerging Areas of Science and Technology”, at the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, Jammu University, here this evening. The Conference was organized by the Department of Statistics, University of Jammu, in conjunction with the XXX Annual Convention of the Indian Society of Probability and Statistics.
The Governor impressed upon the young researchers to undertake relevant research to provide fresh impetus to the overall developmental process, enabling the application of statistical techniques in day to day operational activities. In this connection, he referred to the early days of the post Independence Administration when crop cutting samples were drawn by the officers in the field and the statistics of farm yields in varying agro-climatic environments were analyzed to suitably re-orient the planning approach. He called for appropriate application of Statistics for securing better developmental outcomes.
Referring to the Conference, the Governor congratulated the Department of Statistics, Jammu University, for hosting this mega event in which eminent practitioners of Statistics from within and abroad had participated in large numbers.
The Governor conferred the prestigious Fellowship of the Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) on the President of the ISPS, Prof. P. Rajashekhara Reddy, on the occasion. He also gave away awards and prizes to the young participating scientists on the occasion. He congratulated Prof. Reddy and the awardee scientists and wished them a bright career ahead.
The Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Varun Sahni, speaking on the occasion, said that such conferences enable the University to expose its students and scholars to the latest research in different arenas of knowledge. He said that presentation of 350 research papers during the 3-day conference, besides expert lectures is a significant achievement. He thanked the Governor for participating as Chief Guest in the Valedictory Session of the conference. 
The President, Indian Society for Probability and Statistics, Prof. P. Rajashekhara Reddy, dwelt on the aims and objects of setting up the ISPS and its activities. He appreciated the Jammu University for organizing the Conference. 
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Convener of the Conference, Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, presented the Conference Report, gave details of the number of participants and the papers presented during the working sessions.
Some of the participants of this Conference expressed their views about the usefulness of organizing this event.
The Organizing Secretary of the Conference, Dr. Rahul Gupta presented a Vote of Thanks.
The Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. R. K. Goyal, Deans, Heads of Departments, Faculty Members and students of the University besides the participants of the Conference were present on the occasion.
