Srinagar: Massive protests broke out in Chogal area of Handwara this morning after a youth was shot dead by Army on Friday night

Eyewitnesses said 23-year-old Manzoor Ahmad, son of Ghulam Ahmad Magray was shot dead by a road opening party of Army’s 4 Para and 30 RR around 10:05 pm last night near Bon Mohalla, Chogal bordering the twin districts of Baramulla and Kupwara. After the killing, Army instantly fled from the area fearing protests.
When the news of youth’s death spread this morning, hundreds of men, women and children of Chogal and adjoining areas took to streets and staged anti-Army demonstrations. Chanting slogans, the protesters were demanding stern punishment for the troopers responsible for the killing of the youth.
The protesters also blocked Handwara-Sopore highway near Kulangam.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday registered a case against the army in connection with the killing of Manzoor Ahmed Magray, a class 12th student, shot dead allegedly by troopers last night near Chogal in Handwara.
A police official told Kashmir Express, “We have registered an FIR No. 26 Under Section 302 against the troopers of 4-Para and investigations are on.”
Srinagar based spokesman of the Army, JS Brar told Kashmir Express, "the troopers noticed some movement during an ambush in the area last night. They ordered the person to stop but he didn't."
Reports said, authorities have also ordered a magisterial probe into Magray's killing.
