More snow in store: Weatherman

December 30, Srinagar: While as snowfall continued for the second day Thursday, disrupting normal life in entire Kashmir valley besides damaging half a dozen houses in southern Anantnag district, the Meteorological department has predicted heavy downpour for Friday.
“Moderate to heavy rain/snow will occur at most places over J&K in next 24-hours,” Director MeT office, Sonam Lotus said.
While Srinagar—the summer capital of the Kashmir— was lashed by intermitted snow since early morning, Shopian, Gurez, Gund and Gulmarg witnessed downpour, officials said here.
They said the upper reaches of Shopian district accumulated about 2-ft of snow while main town had 15 inches of snowfall by late afternoon.
Other southern Kashmir areas had 3 inches to 1ft of snow. They said that Anantnag recorded 3 inches, Pahalgam, the health resort, had 5 inches, Awantipore
3 inches, Pulwama 5 inches, Tral and Kulgam had 6 inches while Jawahar Tunnel recorded one feet of snow.
Gulmarg—the world famous ski resort, accumulated about 18 inches of snow while its peripheries including Afarwat accumulated 2 to 3 ft snowfall. Sadnatop, Tangdhar, Goshi Villgam, Harpora, Machil, Sagipora, Handwara, Waterghan, Sogam and other areas had 6 to 10 inches of snow. Sopore and Baramulla town had 2 to 4 inches of snowfall by evening.
Gund in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal had 18 inch of snow followed by Sonamarg which had 1ft while Gumri recorded 10 inches of snowfall by late afternoon.
The main town of Ganderbal had 3 inches of snow while other central Kashmir district, Budgam recorded 4 to 6 inches of snow.
Snowfall was also recorded in second coldest place on globe, Drass with 8 cms while neighboring Kargil in Ladakh region had 5 inches of snowfall.
Due to the snowfall, at least six residential houses suffered damage, Coordinator Disaster Management Cell Kashmir, Aamir Ali told Kashmir Express.
He said a residential house of Ghulam Hassan Teeli was damaged in Pahalgam and two residential houses of Mushtaq Sheikh Son in law of Abdul Gani got damaged at Sallar.
Residential house of Mushtaq, Fayaz, Ramzan sons of Ghulam Nabi Sheikh also got damaged due to snowfall Guree Tehsil Bijbehara.
The house of Ghulam Nabi Khan son of Ghulam Mohidin was damaged at Guchan Sheikhpora Tehsil Dooru after a walnut tree fell on it.
