Srinagar: Welcoming the UN General Assembly’s approval to a resolution seeking world attention on right to self-determination of people in Kashmir and Palestine, Hurriyat Conference(G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani Thursday urged the international body to take “concrete steps beyond passing resolutions in favour of the oppressed nations."
“As long as certain countries enjoy veto power and the UN allows class difference between nations and individuals it is not possible for it to render justice to the oppressed nations. Till then, the UN can only pass resolutions in favour of the oppressed, but can take no concrete action to grant them their rights,” Geelani said.Stating that the current organizational structure was responsible for “inefficiency” of the United Nations in resolving international disputes, including Kashmir and Palestine, Geelani said the wrold body must re-frame its organizational charter “keeping in view the demands of justice and democracy.”
"In the last 63 years, UN has miserably failed to perform its duty of settling disputes between nations and providing justice to the oppressed people as in Kashmir and Palestine, where two imperialistic powers have occupied lands in violation of legal and moral norms. The UN, despite acknowledging the struggle of Kashmiris and Palestinians for their freedom and rights, has failed to take any concrete steps to implement its resolutions,” Geelani said in a statement issued to PBI.
Meanwhile, Geelani strongly resented the posting of “right-wing” officer Rajni to Kotbalwal Jail, alleging that she had banned the “Dars-Quran” classes in the jail. “She is a supporter of BJP and, after turning the Udhampur jail into an interrogation centre, she is now treating political prisoners lodged in the KotBalwal jail as criminals, besides beating them and depriving them of proper food and medical facilities,” he alleged.
